Living Color Festival is a floral display throughout Sydney’s inner city. Its aim is to engage and inspire the community through seasonal plantings, plant sculptures, and unusual plant species. The Spackman Mossop Michaels installation dealt with the concept of weeds. Through the floral and leafy texture of a variety of common weeds, it demonstrated that the concept of a weed is an arbitrary human construct relying on social and economic factors. The project makes connections to topical debates about asylum seekers in Australia, immigration, and manipulation of the natural world for our own ends.
